Background of the Study
Cardiac arrest is a critical medical emergency characterized by the sudden cessation of cardiac function, requiring immediate intervention to prevent death. Nurses play a pivotal role in the management of cardiac arrest through the application of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and advanced life support techniques. Assessing nurses' knowledge and practices in managing cardiac arrest is vital to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
In Sokoto State, Nigeria, the effectiveness of cardiac arrest management may be compromised by gaps in nurses' knowledge and practices. Factors such as inadequate training, lack of exposure to resuscitation scenarios, and limited access to continuing education can hinder the proficiency of nurses in handling cardiac arrest cases. Evaluating these aspects is essential to identify deficiencies and implement corrective measures.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the current level of knowledge among nurses in Sokoto State regarding cardiac arrest management.
2. To evaluate the practices employed by these nurses during cardiac arrest situations.
3. To identify barriers to effective cardiac arrest management and propose strategies for improvement.
Research Questions
1. What is the current level of knowledge among nurses in Sokoto State concerning cardiac arrest management?
2. What practices do nurses employ when managing cardiac arrest cases?
3. What barriers exist that impede effective management of cardiac arrest by nurses in Sokoto State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses in Sokoto State possess varying levels of knowledge regarding cardiac arrest management.
2. There is a discrepancy between recommended practices and the actual practices employed by nurses during cardiac arrest situations.
3. Barriers such as inadequate training and resource limitations negatively impact the effective management of cardiac arrest cases by nurses.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in various healthcare settings across Sokoto State. It will assess their knowledge and practices related to cardiac arrest management and identify factors influencing their performance. Limitations may include self-reported data biases and variability in healthcare facility resources.
